Rippling Out - words, crafts and performances!

At the end of last year, we were delighted to be awarded UKSPF funding for our Medway River Lit project called Ripping Out.

Time to make a difference in the community - we've been awarded Shared Prosperity Funding

Rippling Out is a four month project which will enable us to expand on our festival offerings, by bringing some literary and literary adjacent free performances and workshops to Medway between January to April. See below for more details on what we've got planned.

You can book for all the events which are live on this page.

Rippling Out Craft and Literature Workshops

In our community crafting and literature workshops: Medway based artists will lead free open access creative workshops.

Attendees will be able to learn about 'Phoetry' (the merging of poetry and photography) and have a go (11 + 25 Jan); put poems onto pottery (18 Jan); make zines inspired by the nature and the climate (1 + 8 Feb); make art books inspired by the hidden words at Chatham Historic Dockyard (8 March); and learn how to upcycle and recycle clothes and other items (March tbc).

Aligning with our festival's sustainability theme; craft activities and materials have been selected for their longevity, reusability, or ease of recycling. We'll also be using recycled materials wherever possible in the craft activities.

Rippling Out Sessions

We're also bringing some thought-provoking theatre, comedy and poetry to Medway, in accessible afternoon performances. All activities are suitable for an older family audience, so long as young people are accompanied by a parent or guardian, (due to the nature of some of the topics, parental discretion and an age guideline of 14+ is recommended, unless detailed).

Rippling Out Session 1: Rosie Wilby 'The Breakup Monologues' (Sat 25 Jan)

Award-winning comedian, author and podcaster Rosie Wilby explores the science of heartbreak and reveals the truth about how we can turn a breakup into an opportunity for healing, learning and growth.

Rippling Out Session 2: John McCullough, poet (Sat 22 Feb)

Join John McCullough, award-winning poet for an afternoon of poetry that will bang words together like stones and see what sparks.

Rippling Out Session 3: Kieran Poole 'Milk. Eggs. Bread.' (Date tbc)

Comedian and creator of 'Rubbish Snooker' Kieran Poole investigates the stories of shopping lists left discarded. Pushing your trolley round the supermarket, you find somebody else's handwritten shopping list discarded within it. Perhaps left littered loosely or snug tight in the little clipboard. Who left it and what might the story behind it be?

Rippling Out Session 4: Theresa Lola, poet (Sat 26 April)

Join award-winning poet Theresa Lola, as she reads from her second collection Ceremony for the Nameless (Penguin, 2024).

“Lola joins the ranks of an exciting new wave of young female bards who are widening the appeal of poetry for a new generation.” - Sunday Times Style magazine

Rippling Out Theatre (date tbc)

We're also excited to bring you the screening of a documentary about playwright Sarah Hehir's play The Shadow Garden, which tells the story of a family massacred in the Kosovo war. Sarah will also be on hand for a Q+A following the screening.
